Master Steven Phillips Mr. Phillips is the proud owner of the West Windsor TaeKwonDo & Kickboxing Academy, purchased in 2005 from his mentor Grand Master Ye Bong Choi, a world renowned expert in TaeKwonDo (Korean Martial Arts). The dojang currently has almost 200 full-time TaeKwonDo and Kickboxing students. In 2006, Mr. Phillips installed a regulation Boxing Ring and began hosting Kickboxing Shows. With the sponsorship of Shihan Jonas Nuñez, Jr. – President of the Professional Kickboxing Federation (PKF) – Mr. Phillips has hosted and headlined two “Saturday Night Fights” events at the Academy, attracting competitors from New York State as well as New Jersey, and overflow crowds from the surrounding community. That same year, Mr. Phillips initiated a program through the West Windsor/Plainsboro Recreation Department whereby local students and residents enroll in 8-week introductory courses. Programs in both TaeKwonDo and Kickboxing are offered in the Fall, Winter, Spring and during the Summer. TaeKwonDo classes are offered for 6-12 year olds, 12+ (Teens) and adults. Kickboxing classes are offered mornings and evenings for teens (16+) and adults. At 31 years old, Mr. Phillips is a 4th Degree Black Belt in TaeKwonDo, having studied the art for 24 years – most recently with Grand Master Y.B. Choi. He is an elite level martial artist with a lifetime of training and teaching experience. His early interest in the martial arts and dedicated training earned him a 1st Dan black belt by age 12. He began teaching classes shortly thereafter and competed as a member of Rutgers University’s Tae Kwon Do team when he was only 14 years old. He is an accomplished Kickboxer having trained with World Kickboxing Champions such as Rubin “Legs of Stone” Colon, Benny “The Jet” Ruiz and Orlando Ravera. Since 2005, Mr. Phillips has trained under the supervision of Shihan Jonas Nuñez, Jr., President of the PKF and proprietor of America's Finest Karate & Kickboxing Academy, in Elizabeth, NJ. Specifically, he has been training with Sensei Josè Sulsona, a 3rd degree black belt in the arts of Shotokan Karate-do, Kung-fu and Ryu Renshe-dan, and member of the Miami Force in the World Combat League (http://www.worldcombatleague.com/miami.html ). As a result of this training, and with Shihan Nuñez’ sponsorship, Mr. Phillips has competed in 13 Kickboxing fights and has a 12:1 record – with four (4) knockouts. He holds the following titles: During his 20+ year martial arts career, Mr. Phillips has participated in hundreds of tournaments including full contact Karate, TaeKwonDo, and Kickboxing. His dynamic board-breaking techniques and tenacious sparring skills have generated more than 90 Championships and Tournament Grand Championships. In November 2007, Mr. Phillips completed a specialized 13 week cardio, weights and dietary training program under the tutelage of Dwayne McDaniel, owner of the Diamond Gym in Maplewood, NJ (http://www.diamondgymofnj.com ) and Nutritionist Jason Arntz ( http://contest.bodybuilding.com/bio/114 ) in preparation for the 2007 Eastern USA Bodybuilding, Fitness & Figure Championship. Essential to Mr. Phillips’ appearance in this competition was John Kemper, a Judge for the Mr. Olympia competition, who provided invaluable advice and guidance with regard to diet and physique presentation. In his first ever bodybuilding competition, Mr. Phillips placed 5th in the Novice Middle-Weight Division. In 2008, Mr. Phillips enlisted the personal training services of Larry “Thunderfoot” Cureton, Jersey City Firefighter & Professional Kickboxer. www.LarryCureton.com Larry is a UFC Veteran and a 6th Degree Black Belt. He currently holds Six Super Heavy Weight Title Belts in Kickboxing. With Mr. Cureton’s support and a final intensive two months of training with Mr. Sulsona, Mr. Phillips earned his 4th World Kickboxing Title in May 2008!
